Opening Of A Heart

shaman healing

True healing begins when the spirit is free:

Thomas had been a practical man his whole life. A retired engineer, he valued things that could be explained and measured. But when he was diagnosed with cancer, nothing in his well-ordered world could have prepared him for the journey ahead. Treatments helped, but the disease persisted, leaving him exhausted and uncertain. And so, when a close friend suggested he visit a shaman, Thomas laughed it off at first.

But as the weeks passed and his energy dwindled, the idea began to take hold in his mind. Eventually, curiosity and desperation led him to a small, sun-drenched village in the mountains of Peru, where he was to meet Luis, a renowned healer and shaman.

Luis was a quiet man with kind eyes that held a depth Thomas couldn’t quite place. There was nothing particularly mystical about him; he wore simple clothes and moved with an easy, grounded grace. He welcomed Thomas into his modest home, which smelled of herbs and cedarwood, and offered him tea before speaking.

Thomas didn’t know what to expect, so he explained his situation plainly. He spoke of the cancer, the surgeries, the treatments, and finally, of his fear—the fear that nothing was working, that he was losing the battle.

Luis listened carefully, nodding without judgment or surprise. Then he spoke gently, “Cancer is a physical illness, yes. But it is also a disease of the spirit. The body reflects what the spirit cannot release. Before I can help you heal, I need to know—what burdens are you carrying that are not yours to bear?”

Thomas was taken aback. Burdens? He hadn’t thought of himself as someone with deep emotional wounds. But Luis waited patiently, so he thought back, searching his heart.

Slowly, memories surfaced—his father, an impossibly strict man who had raised Thomas with high expectations and little affection; the years of pushing himself to meet those expectations, of denying himself joy or rest. He had told himself it didn’t matter, that he was strong, that he could carry it all. But sitting here, he could feel those old hurts like weights pressing on his soul.

Luis nodded, sensing the shift in Thomas. “We will begin tonight,” he said.

As dusk fell, Luis prepared a ceremonial space in the garden, lit with candles and fragrant with herbs. He gave Thomas a small, bitter drink and instructed him to close his eyes and breathe deeply. Soon, Thomas felt a strange warmth spread through him, followed by a calm unlike anything he’d ever experienced.

He became aware of a rhythmic drumbeat, steady and grounding. Luis’s voice, deep and soft, began chanting words in a language Thomas didn’t understand, but which seemed to resonate within him. Images started to flood his mind—scenes from his life, moments he had buried: childhood memories, instances of regret, times he’d hidden his emotions. These memories came with a weight, yet, strangely, he felt lighter as they surfaced. It was as though they were being pulled from deep within him, finally freed.

The drumbeats grew softer, and he felt himself drifting into a quiet space, a place that felt timeless, as though he were floating in a warm ocean of peace. In that stillness, he sensed something—a presence that felt familiar yet profound. He didn’t know if it was the spirit of the earth or a force of love, but it felt like an invitation to release his pain, to surrender his burdens and simply…be.

Tears streamed down his face. He hadn’t realized how much he had held onto, how much he had buried out of fear, pride, and habit. But in this place, he could feel his heart opening, emptying itself of all the weight it had carried. And in that emptiness, he felt something new—a quiet, healing energy that filled him with warmth and peace.

When he opened his eyes, dawn was breaking, casting a golden light over the garden. He looked at Luis, who sat calmly beside him, smiling with gentle understanding.

“True healing,” Luis said, “begins when the spirit is free.”

Thomas didn’t know if his cancer would be cured, but he felt changed. He had touched something real, something deep within himself that he’d never accessed before. Over the next weeks, he continued his journey, revisiting memories, releasing old patterns, and learning to forgive himself. He didn’t abandon his medical treatments, but he approached them now with a new sense of wholeness, as though he was finally an ally in his own healing.

Months later, he returned home with a spirit lighter than it had been in years. His body felt stronger, his heart more open. And though he didn’t know what lay ahead, he knew he had been touched by something profound.

He carried within him the lesson he’d learned from the shaman—that true healing was not simply curing an illness, but a journey toward freeing one’s spirit.
